Kids Club

We have a lot of stuff for kids here at Food Under Foot! Many kids attend our walks and we just led a hike for a couple of birthday boys (turning 6 and 7). I (Melissa) often have little zines and handouts…and for the birthday party I made a little activity booklet with a poem/coloring page, maze, word search and riddles about wild edibles.

You’ll see the pages below, but if you click here they’ll come up as a pdf file which you can print out!

Here was the cover (right) and back page (left):

And here are the inner two pages:

Hope you enjoy them!

And…we are really putting together a kids club! Stay tuned for more info! Are your kids interested in wild edible plants? How old are they? What are their favorite plants? Have they read The Hunger Games??? Comment below to answer these questions - I really want to hear!

You can click here to download the pages and enjoy the activities: Kids Club 1

Thanks!

Camille (7) is obsessed with wild edibles...she is already much better at remembering/identifying than I am, as we learn together. She loves sorrel, garlic mustard, nettles, and she learned about teaberry this weekend-I had never tasted it except in the gum. Hunger Games-way too violent for her, but I loved the books. We don't homeschool. I'm hopeful that we can participate somehow.

  • Hi Amy!
I didn't mean to imply you had to be a homeschooler...I was just wondering (maybe I will take that out.) It's probably going to be mostly an online thing...but I'll probably offer special kid walks too. :-)

Hi Melissa! I think V would really be interested in this, but I'm just not sure about time availability. :) She's 9 1/2.

Hi! My daughter is 8 and my son is 5. They both look at me like I'm crazy when I gather dandelion greens to eat. But once my son had a bug bite, and he was pretty amazed that some crushed plantain leaves made it feel better! A kids club is a great idea! I'm just starting to learn about wild edible plants, and would love for my children to learn with me.
I don't homeschool, by the way. We currently live in Murrysville. But this summer we are moving to New Castle.

Lovely! Our daughter is the third member of The 3 Foragers, and she contributes fully! She is 7, she loves berries (of course), red clover, wintergreen, black birch (no kidding, she sleeps with a 3' long "log" of black birch), and cattail flower stalks. Our girl happily eats her greens if she picks them herself.
